One of Athens highlights is the Athens International Airport (AIA) Eleftherios Venizelos . Since its opening in 2001, AIA has seen an annual growth of 7% and has been placed on the list of the fastest growing airports in the world. Year by year, the airport enriches its network with new carriers and destinations.
Currently AIA has direct connections to about 65 international destinations, including all major cities around the world.
It is located 33 km southeast of Athens and is easily accessible via a six lane motorway (the Athens City Ring Road).
Access to Athens and the Port of Piraeus is provided by express airport bus connections on a 24 hour basis, while a direct Metro line connects the airport with the city centre (Syntagma square) in 40 minutes

Greek taxis offer an alternative to mass transit. All licensed taxis are equipped with meters (the fare is charged per km and per hour) and display a card detailing the latest valid tariffs and surcharges.
There are numerous reliable car rental agencies in Athens. Major and local agencies can operate only if licensed by the Greek National Tourist Organization (G.N.T.O.) and require a valid national driving license.
Before renting make sure the vehicle has adequate insurance cover (against accident, theft, re, etc).
Athens has three ports that operate daily routes to the islands. The port of Pireaus is the main port with year round service to international destinations as well as islands of the Argosaronic Gulf, Dodecanese, Ionion, and Cycladic.
Greece follows the Schengen Agreement provision and the subsequent acquis concerning short term visa issues stays of up to three (3) months in the Schengen area. Holders of regular passports from the rest of the world need a visa in order to visit Greece (and the Schengen area).
