Bijambare tract, encompassing 370 ha, is recently proclaimed by law as protected area of the fifth grade ("protected landscape”). It is traditionally highly valued because of its natural beauty and richness. The Reserve is situated in the northeast slopes of the Canton Sarajevo near Nisici highland. Its accessibility, due to favourable position near by the regional road Sarajevo-Tuzla, makes it additionally attractive for tourists. At altitude averaging 950 m a.s.l. thick old evergreen forest with various pine trees and fresh air is found. There are also beautiful meadows crossed by two creaks that form small lakes and sink underground into karstified limestone rock base. Being situated in the karstic region area is rich with most karst phenomena such as karstic depressions, sinkholes and, most importantly, 6 known caves. The reserve is attractive for spelaeology, hiking, cycling, horse-riding, picnic, mountaineering, alpinism, fishing, hunting, skiing, collecting of medical herbs and mushrooms, etc. Certainly, the greatest attraction is the presence and accessibility of caves that are nicely grouped. In three horizons there are five caves that are named and better known, but there is also one more unnamed cave and possibly even more undiscovered ones. The largest cave is called Bijambare main cave, or sometimes: mid-Bijambare or simply Bijambare. The main cave is of considerable magnitude, 420 m long (along the main path, neglecting branches) with 4 huge "halls” stretching up to 60 m in the diameter and to over 30 m in height. One of the halls (the last one) is commonly called "concert-hall” due to its impressive size. The cave is rich with cave "jewellery” forms such as stalactites, stalagmites, curtains, basins, side-blocks and alike. It is presently inhabited by colony of bats and crickets. Other inhabitants could possibly also be found. In the upper Bijambare cave stone-tools of the cave-man were found after brief explorations in 1967. Most probably many more could be dug-out. Skeletons of ancient bears, dears and other animals were also discovered in some of the caves.
In Ethno Beys village is located in a protected natural reserve zone Bijamabare between Niička highlands and Bijambaras cave, place Borak. Altitude is 1040, we are 500 m away from the main road Sarajevo - Tuzla. The village is located 40 km from Sarajevo city center. The siege of Sarajevo began 20 years ago this week (6 April 1992). Lasting nearly four years, it became one of the most dramatic and emblematic events of the violent breakup of the former Yugoslavia and the conflict which left an estimated 200,000 people killed and some 2.7 million refugees and internally displaced - the largest displacement in Europe since the Second World War.
The siege brought enormous suffering and misery to some 400,000 inhabitants of the Bosnian capital at the time. Constantly shelled and sniped, people were cut off from food, medicine, water and electricity. Thousands of civilians were killed and wounded. During the war, people in Bosnia and Herzegovina witnessed every conceivable human rights violation or abuse - ranging from ethnic cleansing and rape to mass executions and starvation.
First stop of our is the Olympic komplex - Olyimpic stadium and Olympic Hall Zetra. Winter Olympic games in '84 were the highest cultural point of Sarajevo as a city. 8 years later Bosnia was in the war, and Sarajevo was under siege. Agressor forces didn't spare olympic komplex.
Historical museum has exibition of the Bosnian war, from beginning and fall of Yugoslavia till Hague tribulal and war crimes. It is horribly ironic but also authentic that a museum such as this, badly damaged during the siege, should now house the permanent exhibtion Surrounded Sarajevo' which looks at the impact of the nearly four years of war on the city's citizens. Here, in a non-partisan or judgemental fashion, the story of the siege is told through photographs and artefacts, from hand-made heating, cooking and fighting implements to aid items that came in from abroad.
In the Tunnel museum you will see how we menage to connect Sarajevo with free Bosnian teritory. Main goal was to bring enough suplies into the city and to bring out the wunded ones. But something else came in the city trouh the tunnel- it was hope, hope for a chance to survive the siege.
The Sarajevo's Jewish cemetery, located outside the town on Mount Trebevic, is one of the most famed Sephardic burial grounds in the world. Founded in 1630, when Rabbi Samuel Baruch rented the land, it is the oldest intact burial ground of any religious group in Sarajevo and is known for its age and beauty.. Cemetery gained worldwide fame as the place from which Sarajevo was attacked the most and from which snipers killed innocent citizens as a part of daily routine.
The first vicimes of the siege were killed on this bridge by serbian snipers. This bridge is also called Romeo and Juliet bridge- unfortunatly this story has also to do with the war.
Sarajevo roses are marked spots on the streets. On these spots granades and mortar shells fell and killed innocent civilians. We have marked them with red color as a reminder of 11541 killed civilians during the siege.
This was the main marketplace during the war, crowded with people. Two times serbian forces killed dozen civilians using mortar shells.
