Salt Mines

Salt is also known as the "white gold" that brought affluence to the entire region. Salt was mined in Hallein and Berchtesgaden not far from the city of Salzburg. Today the salt mines in Berchtesgaden and Hallein offer a fascinating retrospect of days long past and an exciting subterranean experience.

A visit underground is an adventure for the whole family: after slipping into traditional miner's overalls, visitors ride deep inside the mountain on a rail car. The highlights include sliding down the endless mining chutes and riding across the underground salt lake on a raft. The tour continues through the mines on foot with interesting information on the life of the miners and how salt was mined.
