There are three different pay zones for public transit in Berlin. Zone A covers all areas within the S-Bahn circle line, while Zone B goes to Berlin's city limits. Zone C covers Berlin's nearby surrounding area (e.g. Schönefeld Airport, Potsdam, Oranienburg).
If necessary, you can obtain a combined ticket that covers zones AB, BC and ABC. The regular rate applies to adults, while the discount rate applies to children aged 6 to 14. Children that are under 6 years of age do not require a ticket.
You can buy your tickets from one of the many BVG and S-Bahn Berlin ticket selling areas, or directly at the automats in the stations. With their easy menu navigation system that is available in six languages (German, English, French, Spanish, Turkish and Polish), the automats are always accessible and very straightforward.
Berlin's Schönefeld airport is situated in the south-east of the city, around 18km from the City Ost district. The airport is linked to the city by the S45 and S9 suburban railway lines and various regional train services, which depart every half an hour from Hauptbahnhof (main train station), Zoologischer Garten, Friedrichstrasse, Alexanderplatz and Ostbahnhof stations. The Schönefeld Airport Express runs to Schönefeld from Spandau via Zoologischer Garten, Hauptbahnhof and Ostbahnhof. The journey from Hauptbahnhof takes half an hour on the Airport Express service.
In addition, the 171, 162, N46 and N60 buses stop directly outside the airport building, and the 163, 736, N46 and N60 buses stop at 'Flughafen Schönefeld' suburban railway station. From here, it's just a few minutes' walk to the terminal.
Berlin's Tegel airport in the north-west of the city is just five kilometres from the City West district. The shortest routes from the airport to the underground network are via the 109 and 128 buses to Kurt-Schumacher-Platz (U6) or Jakob-Kaiser-Platz (U7) stations. There is also a bus service to the suburban railway and underground station at Jungfernheide (S4/U7).
In addition to the regular bus services, the JetExpressBus TXL offers a particularly fast link to the city centre, e.g. to Hauptbahnhof. In addition, the Expressbus X9 takes you to the Zoologischer Garten station, stopping at just a few selected stations along the way.
