  • One of the most multicultural cities in the world, about 3.5-million people live in Cape Town, making it South Africa's second most-populated city.
  • The world's first heart transplant was performed by Dr Christiaan Barnard in Cape Town in 1967.
  • Waterblommetjiebredie is a uniquely South African stew that literally means "small water flower stew”. It is made of lamb and potatoes stewed together with waterblommetjies - a flower commonly known as Cape pondweed or Cape hawthorn.
  • Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area of Cape Town was inhabited by the Khoisan people. Cape Town was officially founded in 1652 when Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company arrived to set up a halfway point for ships travelling to the East.
  • The city's motto is "Spes Bona”, which is Latin for "good hope”, a relevant motto for WSPID 2013.
  • The Cape Town Stadium was built ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and hosted eight soccer matches during the tournament, including the semi-final between Uruguay and The Netherlands (the Netherlands won the game 3-2)
