Elgin is proof that all good things require a little patience. This is a place where nobody is in a hurry, no deadlines, no needs to be done yesterdays', where grapes are left in peace and ripening occurs slowly. There's a reason for this laid-back attitude to harvesting, longer ripening produces grapes that hold a broad spectrum of flavours resulting in wines of character, defined by excellent purity and density of fruit, complexity and elegance. All in all, completely delicious ends result.
This is the coolest wine growing area along the south coast and conveniently close to Cape Town. There are many farmstalls just off the N2, offering great pit-stops along the way and the area is surrounded by inspiring mountain passes. Along the Elgin Valley Wine Route, you'll find many award-wining Sauvignon Blancs, with the distinctive minerality, crisp acidity, freshness, and after some maturation, fruitiness typical of cool-climate whites. Elgin's earthy, terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Syrah wines, with excellent ageing potential, are also grabbing awards and wine lovers' attention. Additionally, Riesling, Semillon, Chardonnay, Viognier, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and small experimental quantities of Grenache Noir are grown here. A journey down this wine route is the perfect day out.
