Boats are an alternative way for visitors to explore the city, either along the Saône, to L'île Barbe, or along the Rhône, passing by the confluence, so they can discover this new district from another angle.
Lyon is also the starting point for several-day river cruises to Avignon.
Boats can also be used to transfer people between various sites in the city that have piers: conference centre, peninsula, etc.
Over the centuries, Lyon has established close ties with light as a popular tradition, technique and art. In 1989, Lyon was one of France's first cities to develop a "Lighting Plan”, earning recognition for a real "Lyon school” of public lighting. An acknowledged art and technique in its own right, urban lighting has been exported to exceptional sites the world over: the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Castillo del Moro in Havana and the Ho Chi Minh Museum.
In fact, ever since 8th December 1852, the date that Lyon chose to consecrate to Virgin Mary, Lyon has associated light with popular tradition. For the past eight years, the city has even made this event an international attraction by drawing visitors for a 4-night Light Festival, during which international artists transform the city with innovating and surprising scenic designs and light shows, on traditional or unusual sites. This major winter festival attracts several million visitors from all over the world.
