Inaugurated in 2002, the light urban metro network provides both citizens and visitors a comfortable and faster way of transportation around Porto. With 6 lines, over 50 miles in the city are covered by this network, 81 stations in 7 districts, Póvoa do Varzim, Vila do Conde, Maia, Matosinhos, Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia and Gondomar. 9,000 people are estimated to travel per line every hour and for this reason, 12,000 cars have stopped circulating. Rates vary according to the different zones. A first time traveller has to buy the "andante" card - a magnetic rechargeable ticket that can be used both in the metro network and several bus lines, as well as the Funicular of Guindais. There are also 3 tourist routes: the cultural, gastronomic and leisure route.
A network of buses covers the city and fares can be paid upon entering the bus although most of them work with the magnetic "Andante" cards. There are special cards for 1 day or cards for 10 journeys that can be used within the chosen zones. Traditional tramcars also exist, to offer nostalgic tours along the riverside, ocean promenade and Historic Centre.
Taxis can be found in many specific locations around the city and normally take up to four passengers although vehicles for up to 7 people can be asked for at any taxi company.
Visitors may rent a car at one of the following companies: Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National and Sixt.
Many language speaking guides/drivers are available in the city; Limousines take up to 7 passengers.
The trip begins in Porto, which is served by a modern airport with connections to several destinations. The Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport has direct and easy connections to the metro and also buses to the centre of Porto.
